Pearson Language Tests is an umbrella term for PTE Academic Test, PTE General Test and PTE Young Learners Test. PTE meaning Pearson’s Test of English, since its introduction in 2009, has been recognized by 6,000 organizations worldwide.

Pearson Test of English, commonly known as PTE, is an online test for assessing English skills of an individual. It is a computer-graded English language proficiency test which focuses on the real-life use of the English language. It tests Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

It is a forward-moving exam, i.e. there is no option of choosing which section to attempt first, or any option of going back to reattempt a question. Candidates need to be very careful of attempting each and every question carefully and within the time limit.

Main difference between IELTS and PTE-A is that IELTS is a paper based exam, and PTE-A is a computer based. In the case of IELTS the speaking part takes the form of an interview, and in the PTE-A, you simply speak to the computer. Another major difference is that responses in IELTS exam are graded by a human whereas in PTE, it graded by a computer, thereby removing possibility of any human bias.

The scoring range of IELTS is between 0 and 9 with 0.5 increment (Example: 5.0, 6.5 etc.) whereas for PTE, it is between 10 and 90.

There is no restriction on the number of times a student can attempt PTE-A exam. You are allowed to rebook the exam 5 days post each attempt. For example: If you have attempted the exam on 5th of a month then you can rebook the exam on any date after 10th of the same month.

However, it is advisable for you to wait to receive your scores before booking your next attempt.

In short, if writing is your weakest area, PTE-A may be for you. If you would prefer to interact with a human examiner in the speaking section, IELTS may be more suited to you. PTE-A scores are valid for 2 years from the date it is issued.

Your score requirement depends on your purpose of taking the exam. If you are a student planning higher studies in any of the PTE-A accepting countries, you need to check the score requirement with the university you intend to study in. Based on the university and the course of study, the score requirement could vary between 51+ in each to 65+ in each section.

If you are someone who is planning to immigrate to any of the PTE-A accepting countries, then the score requirement will be as directed by immigration authorities. For example, if you are planning to migrate to Australia, and your Australian Point Requirement (PR) is 10 from any of the English language proficiency tests, then you need to score at least 65 in each section of PTE-A. Whereas, if your Australian PR point requirement is 20, then you need to score at least 79 in each section. Consult an immigration consultant to know the exact score requirement.

PTE EXAM SPECIFIC

PTE-A Exam is divided into 4 sections that appear in the following order: Speaking and Writing (combined), Reading and Listening.

It is a forward-moving exam, i.e. neither is there an option of choosing which section to attempt first, nor an option of going back to reattempt a question. Candidates need to be very careful of attempting each and every question carefully and within the time limit.

In all there are 20 different question types in PTE-A Exam test: 5 in Speaking, 2 in Writing, 5 in Reading and 8 in the Listening section.

Since the test assesses real-life academic English level, the questions are formed around lectures, graphs and pie-charts that we encounter in our daily lives.

Section Wise question type details are provided below:

Speaking (5) – Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-Tell Lecture & Answer Short Question

Writing (2) – Summarize Written Text & Writing Essay

Reading (5) – Multiple Choice Single Answer, Multiple Choice Multiple Answers, Re-Order Paragraph, Reading – Filling in the blanks & Reading & Writing- Filling in the blanks

Listening (8) – Summarize Spoken Text, Multiple Choice Single Answer, Multiple Choice Multiple Answer, Fill in the blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Word & Write from Dictation

Integrated tasks are those that test more than one language skill, and therefore reflect the combinations of skills students need at university. For example – assessing the ability to listen to a lecture and then provide an oral summary of the same –under Retell Lecture question type.

PTE-A has more integrated tasks than any other test. Thus, preparing students better for the tasks expected of them at their institution.

PTE-A is a 3-hour test session which includes three sections: Speaking and Writing (together), Listening and Reading.

It is a forward-moving exam, i.e. there is no option of choosing which section to attempt first, or any option of going back to reattempt a question. Candidates need to be very careful of attempting each and every question carefully and within the time limit.

Note, there is an optional break of 10 minutes post Listening section and we recommend all our students at FHP to use the same to refresh/prepare themselves (as per our expert’s guidance) before they attempt the Reading section.

PTE-A exam is scored against the Global Scale of English which marks the candidate on scores ranging from 10-90 in the (Communicative skills) areas of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. 10-being the lowest and 90-the highest.

The result is delivered in the form of a score chart, and typically test-takers get their results within 5 business days of test attempt.

PTE-A score chart also includes the final score, the score on each level, and a detailed breakdown of performance in (Enabling skills) areas like grammar, oral fluency, spelling, vocabulary and written discourse. These scores are displayed in a graph format, which makes the test taker analyze their strengths, weaknesses, the scope of improvement and how each skill contributes to the overall performance.

PTE Diagnostic Test is similar to an actual PTE-A exam. It is a complete 3 Hour duration exam designed to test an individual performance as in any PTE-A exam. It consists of all 20 question types with actual PTE-A exam content (data provided by students with actual PTE-A exam experience).

PTE Diagnostic Test provides you a real time experience of an actual PTE-A exam, with introduction to exam structure i.e. sections/ question types. It provides you with your current level of English and the need of improvement based on our expert’s feedback integration (Once you apply for evaluation).

Once you complete the test and apply for evaluation, our expert spends at least 45 minutes to go through your attempts. The expert will then schedule a 45 -60 minutes one-on-one call with you and help you understand your current level in PTE, explain you the mistakes that you are making. You can attempt Diagnostic Test for FREE. Once you complete the test, you will get an option to apply for evaluation.

After completing the PTE Diagnostic test, you can apply for expert evaluation. On completion of evaluation by our expert, you will see your ability level in each section (Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening) and your current level in all the 20 question types of PTE-A.
